Lums Pond State Park is built around the largest freshwater pond in Delaware. The park features excellent fishing, sports facilities, hiking trails and more on its 1790 acres on the north side of the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal. Lums Pond itself covers 200 acres, and although there is no swimming allowed, boat rentals and fishing provide water-bound recreation in the summer months. A boat launching ramp and two piers allow easy access to the water.

Nemours is a 300-acre country estate of the late industrialist and philanthropist Alfred I. duPont. The Nemours Mansion and Gardens is a breathtaking piece of architecture with a large reflecting pool, long garden walks and a mansion designed in the late 18th-century French style. Founded by Dutch settlers in the 1650s, the historical significance of this riverside community was recognized in 1967 when its historic district was designated as a National Landmark. While the list of noteworthy sites here is seemingly endless, highly recommend stops include the Old New Castle Courthouse, seat of Delaware’s colonial and state government until 1777, the Delaware Historical Society’s Read House and Gardens, and the three museums operated by the New Castle Historical Society.

Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge is a 10,144 acre refuge officially established in 1963 under the authority of the Migratory Bird Conservation Act.
