Delaware couple pays $325K for low-digit license tag

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. (AP) — A Delaware couple has bought a low-digit state license plate for $325,000 at auction.

Ray and Donna White of Wilmington purchased the rare number 14 relic during an estate sale at the Rehoboth Beach firehouse on Sunday. Two others tags were also sold at the auction, with number 457 being sold for $32,000 and number 1785 going for $8,000.

Delaware’s vehicle-registration rules, which allow for license numbers to be transferred and passed down through generations, have created a cottage industry of auctions and sales. Buyers are technically purchasing the number, not the actual license plate.

The record purchase price for a Delaware plate is the $675,000 spent on number 6 by real estate developer and philanthropist Anthony N. Fusco.
