The Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) has cited the DuPont Experimental Station for violations of the state’s hazardous waste laws. The notice orders DuPont to pay a penalty of $53,600 plus another $3,350 to cover the costs of the investigation.
The facility at 200 Powder Mill Road, which hosts research and development operations, contains a hazardous waste incinerator and multiple waste storage pads
DNREC conducted a compliance assessment in May 2017. The assessment found that DuPont had violated the one-year storage limit and failing to properly identify hazardous waste. Chemours generated the hazardous waste in question, but DuPont became liable when it stored the material.
An assessment in July identified another violation of the one-year storage limit. This time the waste was generated by DuPont.
DuPont has 30 days to repeal the order.
