R.S. Widdoes & Son, Inc

R. S. Widdoes & Son Inc. is a veteran-owned, full-service, quality-oriented, award-winning, licensed, bonded and insured, concrete, masonry and general contractor that serves residential, commercial and industrial customers in Delaware and southeastern Pennsylvania. It works directly for homeowners, facility/property managers, other trade contractors, construction managers, architects and engineers, specializing in concrete replacement and new construction, as well as grading, excavation, drainage, masonry foundations and beautiful custom decorative concrete.

The company’s core values were never written down and there was no business plan. When founder Richard Widdoes started, the company’s mission statement was “I want to do quality work for a fair price.” Over the years, says President Michael Widdoes, “we’ve had the opportunity to work for and at some really neat places; most of these projects came through referrals or ‘I’ve seen your work.’ During ups and downs in the economic cycle, we have stayed consistent.”

The company’s structure is not rigid, as roles constantly change and an important part of its success is adaptability. It was important to Richard Widdoes that his son learn all aspects of the trade as well as the business end of things.

“Leadership was and is the most important factor for any owner,” Michael Widdoes says. “My father clearly laid out the groundwork with his ‘lead from the front’ attitude. It wasn’t until later on that roles were clearly defined as the company started to grow.”

The younger Widdoes says he would like the family to be remembered as hard workers that did things right and
as leaders in its industry.

“It’s important to have a legacy to follow; it really does help keep things on track,” Michael says. “It’s also a great feeling to have made my father and grandfather proud.”
