Wilmington Mayor Mike Purzycki arrived at the Wilmington Alliance press conference from the Millennial Summit conference, where he had just updated the 1,000 attendees on changes since the last conference last year, when they told him they needed a more active downtown.

At the Chase Center, Purzycki told the Millennial Summit audience, “Last time we met I told you all the great things we had in store for young people living in our city. Since that time, we have started construction or have opened 1,000 apartments. All over the city there are amazing housing choices and choices that are affordable. Change is no longer on the way, it’s here.”

Purzycki went on to list a number of accomplishments from the past year to both groups:

  • New Restaurants: Bardea, Farmer in the Cow, Stitch House, Girard, and Faire.
  • Torbert Street Social is getting ready to open behind Mikimotos.
  • Three new restaurants have opened in Trolley Square and another is under construction on the Riverfront
  • Three new hotels supporting large events are open in Wilmington.
  • The Pine Box, a 160,000-square-foot soundstage that Purzycki described as a game changer for Wilmington, where world-class acts will come together before setting out on tour.
  • The 76ers Fieldhouse will be connected by a $50 million bridge across the Christina. Purzycki described the facility as not only a great place for professional athletes but also for local kids to go play soccer and basketball.
  • Midtown Apartments and garage. 95% occupied.
  • DECO food hall, offering seven unique destinations under one roof.
  • For the hard to entertain, there is axe throwing at Constitution Yard.
  • The Markell Trail follows a 7.9 mile bike ride to Battery Park in New Castle.
  • The Queen is being run by Live Nation, bringing better acts than ever before.
  • The city is investing $4 million in the refurbishing of Rodney Square.
  • At the Jazz Festival, 7,000 people jammed the square.

“In other words, I kept my end of the bargain,” Purzycki told the Millennial Summit crowd. “We delivered. Now it is up to you.”

At the Queen, Purzycki also mentioned renovations of Baynard Stadium, Eden Park, several other parks and playgrounds, and the Second Chances vertical farm that will open later this year in the Riverside neighborhood.
