Adventure packed vacation seems overwhelming, but according to Harvard Health letter, a prescription for better health is spending time outside. Benefits include increased vitamin D levels, higher activity/exercise levels, elevated mood, increased concentration and faster healing. It can also help improve sleep and decreased anxiety levels. So, while taking a break and spending time laying at the beach seems daunting, an active vacation will bring more benefits and satisfaction.

Some tour companies focus on active adventure travel and will give you an opportunity to explore the world while enjoying your favorite activity such as walking, trekking, cycling, kayaking, rafting, climbing, snorkeling and much more. After being “stuck” at the computer in a stuffy office for months, it only makes sense to take a vacation that will help you rebuild spiritual, emotional and physical health. Most popular activities include the following:

Walking. How about walking one of the seven wonders of the world- Great Wall of China? Or climbing Africa’s highest mountain Kilimanjaro? Sounds too extreme? There is an activity level for everyone! For those who are not fit to climb world’s highest mountains, walking rolling hills of Tuscany might be a better option. Take an opportunity to learn more about Italian wine and discover renaissance cities and medieval villages. Average walk is 3-7 miles a day and there is plenty of time left to enjoy the pool, take a cooking class or a wine tasting tour.

Cycling. How many of us take a cycling class at the gym? Gather your companions (groups get perks!) and enjoy a cycling tour in various destinations around the world. There is no better way to immerse yourself into the destination while exploring hidden spots and undiscovered treasures. Just like walking, cycling tours come in different levels of difficulty varying from a gentle cycling tour in France to a fully supported expedition in Morocco. One of the guided cycling tours that is on my adventure list allows you to explore 3 countries, 3 cultures, ancient monuments and diverging histories on 2 wheels. Explore Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam at a moderate pace of 10 miles/hour ranging from 12 to 55 miles a day.

Winter activities. Get closer to wilderness through snowshoeing in Finland, cross country skiing in Norway, downhill skiing and dogsledding in Slovakia. And don’t forget Northern Lights in Iceland! If winter activities do not excite you, a beautiful arctic scenery will. Venture along frozen rivers, enjoy whale watching and get closer to nature. All tours are guided and suited for different fitness levels.

Vacation does not have to be dull and low key with unchanging scenery. Active adventure vacations are not only great for your health, but also an effective way to reconnect with nature, culture and history.
