Who makes what in Delaware

CEOs, surgeons, college administrators chose wisely

Whether you’re deciding how much to tip the letter carrier at the holidays or helping your college-bound teen pick a major, it helps to know who makes what.

The statisticians at the state Office of Occupational & Labor Market Information compile that information for major occupational groups. (Experienced statisticians, if you’re wondering, average about $56.48 an hour.)

To keep everything apples-to-apples, we compared the state’s experienced wages for 2013″“ based on the average of the highest two-thirds of wages reported.

Benefits are not included, so many school employees and government workers earn much more than their salaries would indicate.

The state list includes some surprises. Who thought chief executives earned less than postsecondary education administrators?

College administrators make $81.06 an hour. Delaware CEOs make $79.23 an hour. If you’re doing the math, that’s $164,798 a year for CEOs, less than may have guessed. Most of Delaware’s 420 chief execs aren’t pictured in Forbes, though, and some run small home-based businesses.

Another surprise: Credit counselors, the people who help get your finances back on track, make $20.67 an hour, possibly less than you do.

Some salaries were just what you probably expected: An experienced clergyperson makes $32.01 an hour, a registered nurse makes $37.37 and a software applications developer makes $56.47.

If you’ve ever wondered what the people whose lives are portrayed on Law And Order earn, police supervisors earn $49.17 an hour, patrol officers earn $35.24, private detectives earn $28.56, lawyers make $88.84 and judges earn $78.22.

If your job is in jeopardy, keep in mind that the human-resources specialist who is carrying an empty box to your desk may make less than you at $36.88 an hour. If it’s an h.r. manager, possibly not. They earn $77.30 an hour.

Now for the others you cross paths with ““ Mail carriers earn $27.18, real estate agents make $32.78, animal trainers make $23.05, bartenders make $10.91 and ushers make $10.22. The tax examiner or revenue agent who gives your taxes a once-over earns $35.38.

If you’re considering a second career as a writer or artist, writers make $38.55, singers earn $26.54, editors make $34.81 and multimedia artists and animators earn $45.30. Graphic designers make $25.85. Floral designers make $14.76. Photographers are paid $24.61 an hour. The people who trim store windows make $16.

Science salaries vary from $19.01 an hour for environmental science and protection technicians to $106.03 for natural sciences managers.

Chemical engineers earn $70.54, civil engineers make $44.61, electrical engineers make $50.13 and computer-hardware engineers earn $48.31. Mechanical engineers make $53.88, materials engineers make $43.66 and environmental engineers earn $41.81.

Big earners include architectural and engineering managers at $78.27 an hour, medical and health-services managers at $63.82 and sales managers at $96.70 an hour. Funeral service managers earn $61.35. Gaming managers make $48.36. Industrial production managers earn $70.55.

Doctors’ pay varies, depending on specialty  — and species. While pediatricians earn $89.36, internists make $113.99 and surgeons earn $120.85.  Veterinarians earn $62.30. Podiatrists earn $90.97.

Financial analysts earn $50.29. Training specialists make $39.11. Market-research analysts earn $44.43. Claims adjusters earn $34.80 an hour, fundraisers make $32.94 and personal financial advisors make $54.53. Loan officers make $40.26.

Guidance counselors earn $33.36 an hour, and substance abuse counselors earn $21.98. Marriage counselors make $25.88.

Ever wonder what substitute teachers are paid to put up with a new class every day? If they are experienced, it’s $14.21 an hour.

Healthcare support is a growing field, but most jobs are comparatively low-paying — $12.47 for home health aides, $14.41 for nursing assistants, $13.50 for physical therapy aides, $30.52 for physical therapy assistants, $19.36 for dental assistants and $28.83 for massage therapists.

Ditto for personal-care occupations: Barbers make $15.72, hairdressers make $21.23 and manicurists and pedicurists earn $11.46.

Among the lowest-paid occupations is childcare worker at $11.54 an hour ““ less than animal caretakers at $11.72.
